Psychotherapy

We provide psychotherapy for adolescents, adults and couples. Our psychotherapy approaches include long-term and brief therapy, psychodynamic relational therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, and "positive psychology".  We work with a variety of different problem and growth areas -- anxiety, depression, grief, relationship difficulties, work conflict, career decisions, life transitions, living with pain, end-of-life concerns, gay and lesbian issues and women's and men's issues.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a method for enhancing awareness and communication between the mind and body. Sensors attached to the body measure physiological processes ("bio") that are usually below conscious awareness. Through a computer display ("feedback") this information becomes available to the person's consciousness. With feedback, the person can become of aware of these processes and learn to control, or self-regulate, them. Some examples of what biofeedback can measure are muscle tension, respiration, heart rate, skin surface temperature and sweat gland activity.

What is Life Coaching?

Life coaching is an action-oriented, focused approach that helps clients achieve specific personal aims. It looks at where you are now, where you would like to be, how you can take specific steps to get there and what the challenges are to taking those steps. It differs from psychotherapy in several ways. It deals less with the distant past, and more on the present and the future. It does not address psychopathology or mental illness. It is collaborative and the client is expected to be highly engaged and active, as is the life coach. Because of its focus on specific aims and actions, with concrete steps to take, it is adaptable to sessions in the office or by telephone.
