As a research associate at the University of California, San Francisco, I studied the relationship between illness and behavioral style. I was then program director of the Cybernetix Medical Institute, Concord, California, for seven years. I directed the biofeedback and behavioral medicine programs and led weekly seminars on preventive behavioral medicine at Mt. Diablo Medical Center.
My research has been published and presented at conferences internationally. I am a past president of the Biofeedback Society of California and was formerly the Executive Director of that organization.
In addition to my research, I also see myself as a coach, trainer and
therapist. I assist clients in overcoming obstacles, reaching their
goals, and achieving unimagined states of positive well-being. My clients
and I enjoy the results of neurofeedback for conditions such as essential
hypertension, anxiety, obsessive worry, sleep disorders, seizure disorders,
attention deficit disorder (ADD) and depression. I have extensive experience
with general biofeedback for such problems as repetitive strain injuries,
phobias, panic, headaches, effects of prostititis, etc.
(I hold certifications in biofeedback, neurofeedback and quantitative EEG.)
In psychotherapy, I like to work with a wide range of issues, including growth and optimal functioning. One of my special interests is exploring with men and women at mid-life the developmental tasks of this stage of life -- relationships, family concerns, and concerns of the single man or woman living in a world of couples. Since I am originally from both Scotland and Ireland and have dealt with the issues of leaving family and culture, I welcome all individuals in this situation. My 20 years of meditation and deep relaxation practice have, I believe, helped me develop my intuitive skills and understanding of the deeper levels of the mind. I deeply appreciate being able, in this manner, to integrate both my professional and personal work.
What is a Registered Psychological Assistant?
In California, a Reg. Psychological Assistant is someone who has already received a doctorate in psychology and is gathering 1500 additional hours of supervised clinical experience that is required before taking the state licensing examination. This is in addition to over 1500 pre-doctoral hours in a variety of settings. A Registered Psychological Assistant, therefore, is an experienced, doctoral-level clinician who will soon become licensed. During this period, they are able to provide services for a somewhat lower fee than a licensed psychologist.
